About the procedure

A surgical procedure in dogs is performed under general anesthesia to ensure that your dog does not experience pain and remains calm and comfortable throughout the procedure.

Your dog will usually be admitted in the morning and examined by the veterinarian beforehand.

During the surgery, your dog will be carefully monitored.

After the procedure, your dog will remain with us for a while to recover and wake up from the anesthesia.

Once your dog has recovered sufficiently, we will contact you to arrange a suitable time for you to pick them up.

At home, rest and proper aftercare are important to help ensure a smooth and speedy recovery.

Preparation

  • Make sure your dog is well exercised and has been taken outside to relieve themselves before the surgery.
  • Please bring your dog fasting: do not give any food after 10:00 PM the evening before the surgery or on the morning of the procedure.
  • Water is allowed.
  • We recommend purchasing a recovery suit and/or protective collar to protect the surgical wound.
  • These are also available from our clinic.

Aftercare

  • Your dog has been given an injection to prevent vomiting.
  • If your dog is hungry, they may eat, but please give small amounts to help prevent nausea.
  • On the day of the surgery, your dog may still be drowsy and tired.
  • The following day, we would expect to see an improvement.
  • Keep your dog calm: for at least 5 days, take short walks and keep your dog on a leash for at least 10 days and do not allow them to swim.
  • Keep the recovery suit and/or protective collar on for at least 10 days and check the wound daily.
  • A free post-operative check-up is included with the surgery.
  • You can schedule this at the reception desk.

Contact us if:

  • Your dog does not want to eat or drink the day after the procedure.
  • Your dog becomes more lethargic on the day of the procedure.
  • The wound becomes red, swollen, or starts bleeding.
