About the procedure

Spaying a dog is a surgical procedure performed under general anesthesia in which the ovaries (and sometimes the uterus) are removed.

It is a morning admission procedure.

As soon as your dog has properly recovered from the anesthesia, you will be called to pick her up.

Preparation

  • Make sure your dog has been well walked before the surgery.
  • Bring your dog on an empty stomach: no food after 10:00 PM the evening before the procedure and no food on the morning of the surgery; drinking water is allowed.
  • We recommend purchasing a recovery suit and/or a recovery collar (cone) to protect the wound.
  • These can also be purchased through us.

Aftercare

  • Your dog has received an injection to prevent vomiting.
  • If she is hungry, she may eat, but give small amounts to avoid nausea.
  • On the day of the operation, your dog may still be drowsy and tired.
  • We expect to see improvement the following day.
  • Keep your dog calm: take only short walks for at least 5 days, and keep her on a leash for at least 10 days.
  • Do not allow her to swim.
  • Keep the recovery suit and/or cone on for at least 10 days, and check the wound daily.
  • A free follow-up check is included after the operation.
  • You can schedule this at the reception desk.

Points to consider

After the procedure, your dog will have lower energy requirements.

We recommend carefully monitoring the amount of food and your dog’s weight.

If needed, you may switch to a special diet formulated for sterilized dogs.

Contact us if:

  • Your dog does not want to eat or drink the day after the procedure.
  • Your dog becomes more lethargic on the day of the procedure.
  • The wound becomes red, swollen, or starts to bleed.
